Natural gas is still not sold in enough places to make it a real alternative to gas.

Natural gas is as clean of a fuel as you're going to get without deploying hydrogen. And natural gas naturally comes out of the ground while hydrogen has to be manufactured.

Natural gas can be a great alternative to oil if they can get enough retail outlets to sell it. I heard this story early this morning on the radio. They had to stop at an airport to fill rhe tanks. The airport was the only place that had the capability to dispense the natural gas into the trucks tanks.

"...clean-burning fuel"? Hardly. I can't imagine it is very fuel efficient at 13L. Another way to use up natural gas, which will eventually cost a fortune to heat our homes.

Great news for Westport shareholders. Share price went up ~ 6% on this news. If this engine is a winner then I'm sure Detroit will pick up on it last and only they petition government for money to implement it.

As long as the fuel tanks are adequately shielded.

This is a welcome offset to higher diesel prices, and create a new sector of demand for an abundant resource. If local fleets (primarily delivery trucks and city buses) convert to using CNG or LNG for in-town deliveries, it will help both diesel prices and urban polution. The U.S. has abundant natural gas deposits and is finding more than they bother to produce.

This means truck stops would need natural gas refueling stations or the truck could be useless.

There used to be more use of natural gas engines. When I was a boy growing up on a farm in the late 1950s and 1960s we had a tractor that ran on natural gas. Low rpm torque was best for diesel engines, poorer for gas engines, and poorest of all for the natural gas engines. I don't know about the performance of the new engines.

This is good news. If we convert the heavy truck fleet to natural gas, we will displace Middle East oil.

The use of Natural Gas to move freight is a good step toward energy independence. I can't see solar or electric powered vehicles moving freight down the road.
