Saving Money at the Pump: Tips to Stretch Your Gas Dollars

FTC -- Whether driving cross-town or cross-country, everybody wants to save money at the pump. Regardless of the make and model, your car's estimated gas mileage is just that — an estimate. An important variable is how you fuel, drive, and maintain your car. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, offers these bumper-to-bumper tips to help you get the most mileage out of your gas purchases:

At the Pump
Check your owner's manual for the most effective octane level for your car. For most cars, the recommended gasoline is regular octane. In most cases, using a higher octane gas than the manufacturer recommends offers no benefit — and costs you at the pump. Some cars do require premium fuel, so before you fill up, check your owner's manual to find out if the hig

I've seen this list posted before, and there's one item in it I always take issue with: the octane tip. It says to make sure the octane you're using is required and not just recommended. I disagree. If your car has a "recommended" octane that is higher than its minimum required octane, use the higher octane "recommended" fuel. Your car will often see enough of a mileage improvement to make up for the increased cost per gallon, plus deliver better performance and help your engine last longer thanks to better spark timing. This is one situation where it's best not to skimp. If your owner's manual says something like "minimum 87, recommended 91," go for the 91.

All good points, but all posted before, guess we're a little slow getting off the learning start point. Still a good read though!

don't have to stay home.. just have to get smart....

I just drove 392 miles on 9.3 gallons of gas in my 2010 Civic Hybrid.

for those that can't divide that is 42 MPG...

most of that driving was at 65-75 MPH...

get a hybrid or pony up for a Volt...

everyday is a day the stubborn get left further behind

one true way of saving money is not taking the car to drive around the corner to pick up smokes or beer. five to ten blocks is close enough to walk. just too many lazy people....me included.

Remove excess weight from the trunk. I guess mother-in-law will have to go. LOL

People who don't read owner's manuals of anything they purchase deserve to get less use of a product.

Pay CASH where a couple of years ago a few stations offered 4 cents to a nickle off for CASH .
Now Most stations offer 10 cents off for CASH. The few stations that do not offer a discount are shunned unless the charge very close to the dime lower cash price!
