Detroit's Big Three automakers surge on U.S. sales to beat estimates

Tampa Bay Times -- SOUTHFIELD, Mich.— Just three years ago, two Detroit automakers headed for bankruptcy and a third suffered record losses. Now North America has become a money machine for the Detroit Three, which earned $4.5 billion there in the first quarter on surging U.S. sales.

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler Group exceeded estimates with first quarter net income that totaled $3.2 billion. The most pleasant surprise was healthy North American operating margins of 11.5 percent at Ford, 7 percent at GM and 4.5 percent at Chrysler. Even combined losses of $405 million in Europe for GM and Ford were better than analysts anticipated from a region in an intractable financial crisis.

Such pleasant surprises would have been unimaginable in 2009 as GM and Chrysler filed Chapter 11 and Ford was coming of

Big three automakers surge on US sales to beat estimates? One automaker has got the message, the other two would not exist without massive taxpayer money. And, the taxpayers will probably never be paid back for their rescue efforts.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

It would be real American of the ones that took the bail out money to pay it back. ANY payback would help the gross over spending of this administration.

OH, Sorry, I forgot, it was Mr Bush that is to blame.

If you want to criticize Romney about the Bailout money wasted. Remember after wasting our tax money the Whitehouse & et al told them to claim bankruptcy anyway, which they could have done to begin with. Then worse Washington helped force the sell of both GM & Chrysler to foreign Companies. Ones who bring in their own employees from their own companies to fill most of the higher paying positions, hiring far less US citizens & mainly in the lower paying positions. Also in addition to more Salaries going to foreign employees any profits now go to foreign company owners. So Whoopee if they are temporarily doing better, If they even truly are & this isn't just another series of twisting numbers to deceive the Public.

Good for the auto industry. I'd still never buy another GM nor Chrysler vehicles since they stole from the American taxpayers. it would be good to see the UAW go the way of the dinosaur.

I sure don't see any economic boost anywhere else. The hiring was down past two months according to the experts. Even if the Auto industry improved some it's too bad GM & Chrysler were sold out to Foreign Companies. Which means more of any money made will go overseas than before. They still use as much foreign made as before but now additional income salary goes to foreign employees & any profit to the Foreign owners so Hooray we gave more money to another Country. Oddly enough however, Toyota is making more vehicles within the USA now than previous.

So I guess that means if you want more of your money spent on vehicles, purchased from the prior top four, to stay in the USA you have to buy from Ford Or Toyota.
