Curtain Closing on Canadian Crude

Oilprice.com -- Shell announced plans to expand its oil sands operations in Alberta province by as much as 90,000 bpd and said similar efforts were under way to make the country's western coast a major export hub for liquefied natural gas. The company's chief executive said Canadian regulators need to act quickly or lose out to similar developments in the Middle East and Australia. With mass protests spilling out of Montreal, and opposition leaders quickly getting under the skin of the conservative Canadian government, the supermajor better move fast before time runs out.

"If Canada wants to compete with those projects when they come into the Asia Pacific, there is a certain time window," he said.

That window may soon be closing.

jimpeel: that oil was never meant for the American market. The Gulf refineries were going to ship it mostly to Europe where fuel is a lot more expensive, thus bringing in higher profits (even with the transport costs).

Americans coming down on us for not riding rough shod over States rights for a pipeline to transport Canada's golden goose to Asia market. People gripe about the pipeline going west to China market, but its okay to cross America to Gulf Ports and on to China. Its the same either way, unless the USA gets the spills and bad air and health problems.

Thank you Mr. Obama. Now the oil will be shipped overseas instead of fueling America's needs.

The curtain is long from closing on Canadian crude. China is still available to purchase.

At least Canada is producing. That is a good thing.

Too bad we are so stupid as to shun using oil from a friendly country.

Does this administration consider getting Canadian oil a foreign import?

How does developing a resource "artifically inflate the Canadian dollar"?

Fuzzy economic theory by politicians who have another a non-economic agenda but know the voter is most concerned about their pocketbook right now.

Leave the tar sands in the ground for now. It is a filthy oil deposit with a very low net energy content and a high environmental pricetag. If bypassed now it will be there for the future when, possibly, new technology could make it a practical rather than marginal resource.

No rush at all! Sell the oil soon or sit on it and sell it later for a higher price as oil is depleted.

We'll get that new pipeline in due time. By the time the elections are over Keystone XL will come up with a workable plan, and whomever's president by then will get the credit for greenlighting the pipeline.

Whether Keystone will care by then is another issue altogether.
