Cheaper gas not enough to boost summer driving

The Miami Herald -- Cheaper gas won’t be enough to get many more Americans on the road this summer. They’re still too worried about their jobs and the economy.
Economists and tourism experts are expecting only a small uptick in summer travelers. Gas prices are lower, but still high enough to keep some Americans off the road. The job market is improving, but still shaky. And household debt remains high.
Those who do travel won’t feel free to splurge. The bulk of road trippers, experts say, will take shorter trips and reduce food and entertainment spending to conserve cash.
“Travel is about security,” said John Larson, vice president for IHS Global Insight, the firm that analyzed the AAA study. “If you feel less secure about your future, you may be less willing to take this trip.”

Fuel is way to high, has stagnated the economy and made every loose faith in the currant system.

Fuel at the pump is too high for summer driving, I will be spending my summer at home!
There is plenty of crude oil but Big Oil refines less fuel to keep the price of fuel at the pump high! Big Oil continues to sell fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. 'Coming out of the closet' Barry will support natural gas and oil production for sale on the world market to pay for his ‘spending gone wild’ addiction and receive the huge federal tax income for oil. Barry's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population. The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump for their benefit.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

You sound like a pretty witty guy, danreino. Got any new anti-Obama slogans? These are getting a little stale.

Boy, you got an interesting way of seeing the world, coke_kid.

Obama caused high gas prices? You forget what was the price of gas while George W. Bush was in office? I'll remind you. It was $4.00/gal, right before he drove the economy off a cliff.

Obama overspending? Well, let's see. He inhereited two wars that were never paid for and 750,000 taxpayers losing their jobs every month who now went from paying taxes to collecting unemployment. Oh yeah, and he inherited a Republican-sponsored Medicare prescription drug program. And, on top of that, he got stuck with the Bush tax cuts that he couldn't repeal in a recession because that's the most sure fire way to kill the economy. Just look at Europe if you don't believe me.

Yeah, it's all Obama's fault. Riiiight!"

With our 50+ MPG Prius we no longer feel that we need to give up on our vacations. Of course if you are driving some big detroit SUV or Van, you may still have problems affording to drive at all.

Feeling insecure? You think electing and re electing Democrats and Republicans is the answer? You think a politicians stance on pointless social/cultural/religious issues are more important than the economy and size of government?

Its insane to do the same thing over and over and expect different results. But hey, we'll make another mistake with Obama or Romney.

Want to boost driving for the summer? Don't.

Save your miles so you can VOTE the rascals out in November.

It's sad but true. There are many factors for most people this year, it's not just the gasoline prices. Nice article.

Get 450-480 miles per fill-up and fill-ups cost $40 or less.Haven't had to make any great changes, just smarter strategy.

The economy is more than the cost of a tank of gas. Everythin is going up while incomes remain flat.
