Pretty good, given that I drive a 4.3L V8 and get almost 30 miles per gallon (9.7 kms per litre). Go easy on the acceleration, keep tires properly inflated, and change that air filter !

If I did more highway it would be average, but since I don't it's likely less.

I own 3 vehicles, A Ford Taurus wagon '99, an Acura Legend '87 and a Chevy Van '84. On average the Ford and Acura get low to mid 20 mpg and the Van gets mid to upper teens. I only wish I could change them all into natural gas machines because this Oil monopoly as far as transportation goes really sucks and is holding us all hostage, forcing us to put up with ever increasing prices at all levels. We need a bridge technology to get us away from these leeches. Greed is the driving force and POLITICS is the propoganda machine.

Kinda hard for a vehicle that averages ~54 mpg to be anything other than G&E. :-D

My pickup is worse than average, though at 10-13 mpg, I cannot call it a gas hog. I'm not sure what JT and others consider the mpgs for gashogs, worse than average, average/typical and Pretty good to be. The other vehicle at my house is average to typical. I am disappointed that the Ford Festiva does not get better than 14 to 17 mpg. I will admit that too many of its miles are city driving, and not much is highway driving.

I voted "Pretty good". The average for cars in Canada is about 8.5 L/100Km. And I am getting 5.74 L/100Km, 49.2 m/g Can, 41.0 m/g USA. Since I bought 2004 Corolla I have gone 77912 kilometres on 4469.8 litres.

Efficient. My '94 Sentra with 275,000 mi. still gets 39 mpg. with 30% E-85,70% regular gas & 3 oz. acetone to ten gal. gas. Been running this mix for two years with no problems.

Remember that mileage is only one factor in a vehicle's economy. Purchase price, loan interest, depreciation, yada, yada, all go into the calculation. An old, fully-owned car that gets not-so-good mileage but has minimal repairs is more economical than a new hybrid with a payment coupon book...

I am really surprised that the percentage of gas hogs is so low.
Driving the 400 everyday the road seems full of them.

Fuel consumption might not be the entire factor. The guys who build the smart fortwo (intentionally no caps as that is how the manufacturer spells it) car say that the average car carries 1.2 people. By simply adding one person to the vehicle, you double your seat miles. Using that logic, a motor home getting 10mpg and carrying two people gets better mileage than a pickup truck that gets 16mpg and carries one person.

My Honda CR-V gets about 20 city, 25 highway. That's pretty good for a small SUV. It is hard to find solid fuel economy with the size that many people with houses and families need to transport. If there were a good alternative, I would love to see it.

I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4, which gets 16.3 on my daily commute, and 22 on the open road driving like the Green guy I really am. I just outgrew in family, body size and job, a smaller car.

At 74 MPG average, even "green and efficient" does not describe my car. Current world record would be more accurate. Mercedes Benz Smart Fortwo Diesel.
