Summer travel forecast brightens for U.S. consumers

GasBuddy Blog -- TripAdvisor, which describes itself as "the world's largest travel site," announced this month that its annual travel survey indicates American consumer intent to travel is on the increase. 86 percent of respondents are planning leisure trips this summer, up from 81 percent who traveled last summer.

A separate survey showed that recently declining gas prices will not have an effect on leisure travel plans this summer, according to 86 percent of respondents, however 10 percent now expect to take more trips by car this summer because of the decline in retail gasoline.

Most importantly, only 27 percent say they will spend more on summer travel than they did in 2011 while 47 percent say they plan to spend the same amount...

Wasn't going to go anywhere, but if gasoline comes down a little more and stays down, we may just rethink our plans.

We're traveling, REGARDLESS of fuel costs this year. We'll just make more shorter trips. Thank God we live in an area of abundant beauty within easy striking distance.

Travel forecast is directly proportional to the cost of gas.

It will be chaeper to drive if the price stays steady. It would be better if it continues to fall.

Agreed - the cost difference is not that much and you can cut on buying souvenirs and other crap you don't need.

On the other hand they write all this possibly lying making you think other people do what you wanted to do so you you do it even if you didn't really want to do it.

fengheng:
I have a Chev Impala that gets 32mpg highway.

If you to make it worse than how about 15MPG.....that would only be a $57 dollar difference.

enaud has a good point. I will not vacation, not because of gas prices, but because of what has happened to the economy in general. No longer affordable.

Not likely anybody will travel with a 35MPG small car.

The reason people take vacations has little to do with gas prices.
If you drive 2000 miles on your vacation at 35MPG, the difference between $4.00 per gallon versus $3.50 per gallon saves you a whopping $30.
Its more of a frame of mind than actual cost.

I drove from Reno to LA yesterday. Wherever you go, be sure to allow extra time for road construction. And don't be surprised when gas is more than $5/gallon! (Fill up before you get to Bridgeport, CA)

I will be traveling this summer, but not due to the lower gas prices, but because I've already budgeted/planned to go on vacation a while ago.

Pretty much a "No-Brainer" there. When it comes to vacations though, people are still going to go no matter what. They're already spending a lot of money on it, and few dollars more for fuel won't disway them one way or the other. It may, however, limit them as to how far they can travel.

I dont think so ! With bad job numbers and no real intense performance from white house. Just specialize J&J bandaids fpr political favorite is hurting the economy. We need people to work in this country. That is all that matters and not min. wage jobs either in this country.

If you're going anywhere but a major metropolitan area, it seems like gas should be reasonably priced. . . ?
