Refinery maintenance season nearing completion

GasBuddy Blog -- Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, the official start to the U.S. driving season, refineries are finishing maintenance and other planned outages to boost production of refined products.

For thirteen consecutive weeks, total motor gasoline inventories have fallen. One would have to go back to February to find the last weekly Energy Information Administration report that showed an increase in total gasoline inventories. Much of the reason for declining inventories was due to a switch-over in the type of gasoline consumed (as required by the EPA), but also because of refining issues. Most notably, a fire at BP's Cherry Point, Washington refinery back in mid-February.

Many facilities have completed maintenance, but there...

We have enough excess capacity that gasoline is being exported. Interesting that with maintenance season nationwide prices have been going down. Unfortunately on the west coast we saw a spike around May 12th that I would love to be able to explain.

saleboss: Pig Oil uses it as an excuse, don't think it's the real reason. Remember, most important for Pig Oil is that ever coveted ROI.

This has been the reason gas has stayed so high when the price of oil has gone down so much!

Yes, utilization % has decreased.
Capacity has increased when maintenance was done at various plants, particularly in LA. This was easier than getting approval for building new plants.
Next time include total refinery capacity. Then you'll see that they are refining as much as before, perhaps more. Excess is sold overseas.

I'm no expert here but could one refinery product the winter fuel while the other produces the summer blend and there would be a seamless transistion?

No...let's shut down refineries and drive up costs...thats job security.
