HYBRID, ELECTRIC SURGE

Associated Press -- DETROIT — Americans are buying record numbers of hybrid and electric cars as gas prices climb and new models arrive in showrooms, giving the vehicles their greatest share yet of the U.S. auto market.

Consumers bought a record 52,000 gas-electric hybrids and all-electric cars in March, up from 34,000 during the same month last year.

The two categories combined made up 3.64 percent of total U.S. sales, their highest monthly market share ever, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. The previous high was 3.56 percent in July 2009, when the Cash for Clunkers program encouraged people to trade in old gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient cars.

Attention please: As more electric or hybrid vehicles are sold, the less oil we need to buy from OPEC. These alternative vehicle sales benefit all of us.

If you want a hybrid, I still say that the Prius is the best on the market, although I don't own one.

Worst ime to buy them is when gas prices are high. They charge a premium for them now and don't give you much for your low mpg trade in.

Few are good for themselves and others by using less oil. We will do more good if we build good mass transportation facilities... as we increase our population it is eventually the best solution. look around the world.

This will be a niche market for many years, but wider variety becoming available means interested buyers can find the vehicle that meets their needs.

Even though an older article it still reminds me that diesels just don't sound good.
A nice v8 has less gas mileage sounds spectacular.

Another good alternative or high efficiency energy combination would be the Flex-fuel/electric hybrid. Do any car manufacturers offer a flex fuel electric hybrid?

ww2gas - With diesels the sticker shock is at the pump with diesel as much as .30 a gallon higher (as much as .50 last year)
and if a significant number of drivers switch to diesel (5% or more) the price difference in diesel and gas would increase more (supply and demand)
Several years ago diesel ran .10 a gallon or more cheaper than gas

Of course, there's always diesel for great mileage without batteries or as much sticker shock.

I do not think that they realize the mistake they are making. The resale on these vehicles is nill.
