Dr. Michael Shermer, founder of the Skeptic Society (of which I'm a proud member) said (paraphrasing here), "Atheists appreciate life and death far more than Christians, because we know the end is really the end, and we don't expect some sort of afterlife to make amends, say what we need to say, show our love and affection, etc."

I agree. When my mom died a few years ago, I assumed it was the last time I'd ever talk to her, and I told her everything I could think to say. I'll never understand why Christians are even so terribly sad when someone dies- they're supposedly in heaven having the best possible time, and you also think that you are going there, so you'll definitely meet up in the relatively near future... why be so damn upset? Almost goes to show that faith runs skin deep in many cases.

Wonton, you may bump into your mother after you die. If she comes back as a worm, you may come back as a bird and eat her.

So you believe that nothing exists after this life, that doesn't mean you appreciate life more. Are you always living life to the fullest? Are you selfless or selfish?

People are sad when their loved ones die because usually that individual meant/means a lot to them. Yes we know they are going to heaven thats why it gets easier, crying occurs because you miss that person. I guess you not being sad is your own issue.

Good point. If it didn't, would those who profess to believe be as bothered as many seem to be by non-believers?

I belive that they live in a world of all there own. Meaning they have to belive in something other then there selfs. If they can belive in this one man that can save the world, mean while letting all the people starving, Come on he dont love you. He's pissed off.

I think religious believers think they enjoy life more. The more I hear from them, the more I feel like religion acts as a drug for some people. It tends to create a false sense of euphoria and even hallucinations for some. I've found other ways to achieve these nice feelings, but I won't go into that here!

Speaking of funerals, I find it very offensive (and I don't get offended easily) when people say things they think are soothing assuming everyone is religious. I don't want to hear that it's ok that my loved one died because they're in heaven now. That brings me zero comfort.

Think of the con job the mulahs have done on the suicide bombers who expect to have 40 virgins in Paradise. (Although nobody seems to think about the virgins feel about this whole setup. And they're not virgins for long so it doesn't make sense.)

Life after death- the greatest conjob of all time. One doesn't want to be that wrong on their oun, better to be a part of a large group with the same views.
