There are a lot of cheerleaders for the nation's natural gas boom — in part because they believe it's a lot cleaner than dirty coal. It's pretty well-known that power plants that burn coal pump out far more greenhouse gases than power plants that run on natural gas.

But there's a hitch: We don't really know how much air pollution is created when companies drill for natural gas.

john382: I dont know but there is a down side to most everything.

If you mean that there are always risks associated with every energy production, you're right. The preferred goal for governments and corporations must be to minimize these risks, especially as they pertain to health, life and the environment.

Fracking pollutes, both in air and water pollution. Yet, even these risks can be minimized except massive profits now out way safety.

Not all coal is dirty. Western US coal is much cleaner than eastern US coal.

I guess it's not news unless the press uses the "F" word. The headline is the only time the well completion procedure of hydraulic fracturing is mentioned.

Ms. Petron needs to drive her Prius down here this afternoon--I'll have something for her to record. I'm planning on having Mexican for lunch. :-)

Like everything else in the business world, if they are not forced to measure or control something, then they won't because "it cost too much." Civil responsibility always seems to takes a back seat to profits.
