plas, I agree, a merger or mergee should not make big changes, but you can tell if someone speeds up to let you easily in behind them, or takes their foot off the gas to coast a moment to let you in before them. Putting on the brakes, I agree, would mess with the flow. But, there are times when the merger and mergee are going the same speed coming in to the merge area and there could be cars behind both drivers, and if the mergee didn't adjust, the mergee would have to slow down, and that would have a huge ripple effect on the merging flow.

How about: cars are stopped at a red light. A driveway enters into the road. A car is trying to get out of the parking lot. A mannered driver has pulled up to the stopping area, and doesn't pull all the way up to the car in front of them and gives room for the parking lot exiter to get on the road. That could be thank worthy.

I know manners and understand thanking but how often is there a situation in which you would have to thank another driver? If everyone followed the rules there would be no reason for anyone to have to extend any courtesies, right? One situation is if someone gives up a parking space for you. That would be thank worthy.

Plas, it's called manners. Not all people know the definition.

If they let you in on a merge lane, where they didn't have to, then they were not properly merging and were holding up the traffic behind them. I wouldn't thank someone for holding up scores of people behind them.

For doing something courteous, that they didn't really have to do, to be nice. Like letting you in on the merge lane.

Why would you need to thank another driver?

I do if someone changes their driving to accomodate me. I wave FREQUENTLY while biking when vehicles do not pull into intersections that I have the 'right' to, ie, they are at a stop sign at an intersection, I have no stop sign so I can ride thru the intersection, and they do not pull into the intersection.
