there's a requirement from the gov't that all gas should have some fuel detergent in them already...

You'll only see an increase in FE if your fuel injectors are dirty/partially clogged to begin with. Fuel additives that are formulated to CLEAN are still a good idea to use at certain mileage/time intervals, depending on your driving habits.

Use a top tier fuel and you won't need it. Google top tier gas for brand names.
