How important is replacing the pollen filter? Does it decrease performance if it is not replaced?

Not replacing this filter does not affect the car's performance.

when I searched it what I found is that it is located behind the glove box so you will have to remove it and the panel behind it to access the filter. should be pretty easy to get to it.

Anyone know if on a 2006 VW GTI this is relatively easy to do yourself? Is it accessed via the glovebox?

Cabin filters should be replaced. How often, check your manual. Many of the newer vehicles do not have cabin filters anymore. I have a 2007 Grand Prix that, by design, is not very effective.

If you want to keep pollen away from your nose it helps. I have tree pollen allergies and replace mine every couple years as it gets dirty fast.

If the cabin filter gets dirty or plugged, it can cost more by causing the heat/cooling unit to take more time to defrost windshield or cool the vehicle.

This filter has the same job to do(similiar to a forced air home furnace filter) only smaller(usually accessed from inside passenger side under and behind glove compartment box.

Often the glovebox liner box must be removed to gain access(there is a seal usually around the removeable plate close to floor area.

It will effect air quality in the car, not fuel economy.

Replacing the cabin (aka pollen) filter will not only keep the air cleaner in your vehicle, but it will also keep your blower motor from working so hard if it's plugged.

do you mean cabin filter ?

I did a search and found info on the filter you are talking about. it has nothing to do with economy but cleans the air you breathe coming into the car. at worst if it clogs you wont get fresh air with the windows closed and the heat may not function properly if the filter clogs.

Yeah, I understand the air filter. But my VW apparently also has a pollen filter separate from that.

do you mean air filter ? a clean filter is very important.

a clogged filter = less air choking the engine resulting in poor mileage.

think of it as a vacuum bag that gets full. the vacuum will not perform very well when the bag is near full.
